Angel Sunday in Carbondale
|

|
The Carbondale Congregation celebrates an annual tradition
known as "Angel Sunday" on the fourth Sunday of Advent. During the previous
three weeks, as various elements of the Christmas story unfold, different
characters will be added to the nativity scene in the worship center: |
- first some shepherds and their sheep
- later cattle and a donkey
- followed by Magi, Joseph and Mary.
Then, on the final service before Christmas when the baby Jesus is at last
laid in the manger, He is welcomed by a multitude of the heavenly host.
Each member of the congregation is asked to bring any representations of
angels that they may have in their homes. Some will bring statues or wood
carvings, others will have pins or wall hangings. We've even seen angel pillows,
Christmas tree toppers, candles, etc. When the members add their angels to the
worship center, the affect is dramatic and the result is a blending of a wide
variety of angel styles into one, harmonious body. Truly, if we believe that
angels walk among us, then we must also believe that they appear in many
different forms.
